Warsaw to Impose City-Wide Nighttime Alcohol Ban

Warsaw is gearing up to introduce new regulations on alcohol sales as part of a city-wide ban at night. Starting on June 1, 2026, it will no longer be legal to sell any alcohol during late-night hours until 6 a.m. The news was shared by Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski and will bring the capital in line with a growing number of Polish cities that have done the same thing recently.

Details of the Ban
Mayor Trzaskowski explained that the precise starting hour of the ban has not yet been determined, but the existing idea is to restrict alcohol sales throughout all of Warsaw to address related disturbances, in totality.

A resolution will be sent to the Council to consider in spring 2026, and discussions included possibly implementing a trial in two districts: the city centre and Praga-Północ, in the northeast part of the capital.

"The vast majority of people who live in Warsaw want restrictions on alcohol sales at night across the city—and they are what we will do if no change is made. Step by step. Forward. In the right direction," Trzaskowski said when announcing the plan.

Growing Trend Across Poland
The announcement follows a growing trend across Poland. Between 2018 and 2024, about 180 municipalities put restrictions on late-night alcohol sales either in full or in measures.

Most notable in this trend of alcohol restriction are the cities of Słupsk, Szczecin, and Gdańsk, which have all implemented restrictions either temporarily during a tourist season or all-in full recently. Authorities state these restrictions mitigate issues of public safety, disorder, and health concerns of intoxication.

Public Support for Restrictions
Public opinion polls indicate a good, solid backing in favor of the move for limits imposed in Warsaw. An IBRiS poll reported that 68% of people responding to the poll favor limiting the sale of alcohol at night. Support is particularly high among younger adults (73%), while more than 80% of women responding to the poll also favor limitations on the side of the community.

The numbers suggest that this proposal will likely receive a formally sanctioned backing after the proposal is put in place, which contrasts with the view of the city government, as they want to move forward with an entire implementation in 2026.

Poland Extends Belarus Border Exclusion Zone

Poland has opted to elongate its border exclusion zone (comprising 56 km of its eastern Podlaskie province) adjacent to Belarus for an additional three-month period. This move, aimed at preventing illegal crossings, has been attributed by Poland to being part of Russia's hybrid war through the actions of Belarus. The original establishment of the exclusion zone was in June 2024 for an initial 90-day period. The exclusion zone was created to address illegal border crossings and human trafficking, and subsequently renewed every three months since its initial establishment. The current regulations and rules end on March 4.

NATO launches Arctic Sentry amid rising tensions

The announcement of "Arctic Sentry," a new NATO security initiative, signals a fundamental change in the way NATO regards the Arctic region. A former US Arctic envoy, Michael Sfraga, has suggested that "no more innocence" will be allowed to rule the Arctic, and has warned of a serious lack of concern regarding tensions in the Arctic due to the growth of geopolitical competition. Arctic Sentry signals a change in the Arctic from the view that the Arctic will continue to be a zone for peaceful cooperation through to a view where there will continue to be increased military activity and strategic interests, moving forward, as opposed to the past.

Polish Coal Miners Protest Underground Before Christmas

About 30 – 40 coal miners employed at the "Silesia" coal mine in southern Poland have decided to hold an underground protest as they do not want to exit the mine prior to Christmas. The protests are a result of the job cuts, but also because the miners do not qualify for any of the new protections granted under the Polish Mining Act, which was signed into law last week, and therefore have no legal recourse for their grievances.
