The deployment increases the operational capabilities of the NATO force, including logistics and air mobility.

The arrival was confirmed to The Baltic Times by Task Force Latvia in a social media post on Friday, the service's heavy-lift helicopters are currently preparing for flight at the Lielvārde air base.

"A rather unusual phenomenon will be observed in Latvian skies very soon!" the post read.

Modern Capabilities for Expanded Operations
These multi-mission helicopters fulfil domestic and deployed tasks around the world. One strengths of aircraft is are ability to carry both personnel and heavy equipment, including a sling load lift capacity up to 12,000 kg.

“These state-of-the-art, multi-mission helicopters are used to transport equipment and supplies as well as personnel during domestic and deployed operations,” the Canadian contingent added. “They are bringing a whole new set of capabilities.”

The Chinooks will serve in Latvia alongside four CH-146 Griffon choppers already operating there. The Griffons, which were delivered last July, were part of Canada’s effort to supply its largest military mission abroad.

A Broader Multinational Force
Canada holds the Command of NATO Multinational Brigade in Latvia which is currently constituted with personnel and equipment of several allied nations: Albania, the Czech Republic, Italy, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Spain. Sweden, NATO’s latest member joined the brigade earlier this year.

The contribution of the Chinook helicopters is another move to add to the alliance’s readiness and mobility on NATO’s eastern flank.
