Romania Buys Israeli Anti-Air Systems for Over €2 Billion

Romania has agreed to purchase advanced anti-aircraft systems from Israel in a deal worth more than €2 billion ($2.3 billion), the country's defence ministry announced on Monday.

The agreement involves buying Shorad-Vshorad systems, made by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, known for producing the well-known Iron Dome system.

The European Union and NATO member countries are taking steps to improve their defence capabilities amid rising security concerns following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Romania, which shares a 650 km (400-mile) border with Ukraine, has faced multiple incidents of Russian drone fragments landing on its territory during attacks on Ukrainian ports.

Deal Includes Multiple Systems and Support Packages
The newly signed framework agreement will allow Romania to sign three additional contracts. Through these contracts, the country will receive six integrated anti-aircraft systems along with training, ammunition, and full logistical support.

The agreement will run for seven years, and the first two Vshorad systems are scheduled to be delivered within three years of the first contract signing.

This move aligns with broader efforts by Romania and other European nations to increase defence spending in response to growing regional threats.
