Hurkacz Retires Injured in Wimbledon Fourth Round

Hubert Hurkacz's remarkable return to form at Wimbledon ended in heartbreak on Sunday when a rib injury forced him to retire mid-match against Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff. The Polish star was forced to quit in the fifth set with the score reading 6-3, 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (2-7), 5-7, 2-4, bringing his fourth-round campaign to an abrupt and painful halt.

Pain Forces Painful Exit
Trouble first appeared for the 29-year-old during the fourth set, when he began struggling with discomfort around his ribs. The injury made it difficult for him to twist his upper body, and he called on the physiotherapist multiple times as he tried to battle through the pain. Eventually, with the issue proving too much to manage, Hurkacz had no choice but to withdraw from the contest.

It was a cruel way for his tournament to end, especially given how well things had been going up to that point. Hurkacz had been rebuilding his career after a serious knee injury at the 2024 championships knocked him completely off course, sending his ranking tumbling from a career-best world No. 7 down to No. 96. This year's Wimbledon had looked like a genuine turning point, with wins over Norway's 11th seed Casper Ruud, Austria's Sebastian Ofner, and American 21st seed Tommy Paul carrying him all the way to the fourth round.

A Tough Fortnight for Polish Tennis
With Hurkacz out, Poland's involvement in the singles draws at this year's Wimbledon has officially come to a close, as he was the last remaining Polish player in the tournament. It capped off a difficult two weeks for the country's tennis contingent overall. Defending women's champion Iga Świątek, who carried the biggest expectations among the Polish players, was knocked out in the third round, falling 7-6 (11-9), 6-2 to unseeded Filipino player Alexsandra Eala.

Things were equally rough for the rest of the Polish contingent. Maja Chwalińska, who had been in good form following a solid showing at Roland Garros, went out on the very first day of the tournament, while Magda Linette and Magdalena Fręch also suffered early exits. On the men's side, Kamil Majchrzak, Poland's leading player, was eliminated in the second round.
