UEFA Nations Unite to Boycott World Cup Over FIFA Plan

In a striking show of unity, every single UEFA member association, Poland included, has voted unanimously to boycott the World Cup and all other FIFA competitions. The decision came following a virtual meeting held on Thursday, in protest of FIFA's plan to sell stakes in a new subsidiary set to oversee its tournaments to outside investors.

FIFA's $20 Billion Plan Sparks Backlash
The controversy stems from an announcement made earlier in the week, when FIFA revealed plans to establish a $20 billion subsidiary responsible for running the World Cup and its other major events. Under the plan, external investors would be offered stakes of up to 20% in this new entity.

UEFA didn't mince words in its response. "No UEFA national teams will participate in any FIFA competition for so long as these proposals remain alive, unless this proposal has been abandoned in its entirety and binding assurances have been given that FIFA will never again open its governance or competitions to private ownership," the organization said in a statement. It went further, framing the World Cup as something far bigger than a business asset: "The World Cup cannot be treated as an investment product. It is one of football's greatest sporting legacies. It has been built over generations by players, national teams and supporters across every continent." The statement closed with a firm declaration - "No part of it should ever be surrendered to private investors. The World Cup is not for sale."

Support Grows Beyond Europe
The backing for UEFA's stance didn't stop at Europe's borders. A spokesperson for the English FA voiced support for the move, stating that the organization "stands shoulder to shoulder with our European colleagues." Elsewhere, both the Asian Football Confederation and CONCACAF had already spoken out strongly against FIFA's plan, pointing out that they were left out of the decision-making process entirely.

Looking ahead, the football calendar remains busy regardless of the dispute. The Women's World Cup is scheduled to take place in Brazil next year, while FIFA is also preparing to launch its first-ever Under-15 World Cup in Azerbaijan this October.
