Ukrainian War Amputees Begin Football Rehab in Rzeszów

A football rehabilitation program for Ukrainian war veterans who have lost limbs kicked off this week in Rzeszów, a city in southeastern Poland. The project, for which amputees from all over Ukraine have gathered here this week, is to learn amputee football, a modified sport for those with limb loss.

The training programme lasts for one week, tackles not only physical, but also emotional recuperation. “Through sport, community and faith in themselves, they restore not only their bodies but also their spirit,” said Oleh Kuts, Ukraine’s consul general in Lublin.

Constructing a League, Rebuilding Lives
Another goal is to use the training camp as a base for a potential national amputee football championship in Ukraine. Veterans who have playing experience are also learning newcomers to the sport, many of whom come from places like Kyiv and Kharkiv.

The effort is part of a larger vision to establish ongoing chances for wounded soldiers to remain active and empowered.

“These new players from the future Ukrainian Amputee Football league are the determination, the inspiration, the will to go on – no matter what,” Kuts said.

“They are our heroes, and we should have the right to get them back to active life with honor.

Community Support and Future Plans
Women and children have also been encouraged to attend some training sessions, assisting in promoting more inclusiveness. The program is funded by the All4UA Foundation, the city of Rzeszów, and the Legia Warsaw Foundation.

Two more training and rehab camps are planned to take place in late summer and early fall to further the mission of helping veterans-- one goal, one game at a time as they rebuild their lives.
