Szczęsny Signs New Barcelona Deal After Standout Season

Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny has extended his contract with Barcelona until the summer of 2027, the Spanish champions announced on Thursday. The move comes after a strong debut season in which the 35-year-old became a reliable presence in goal.

SzczÄ™sny arrived at Barcelona last October when first-choice keeper Marc-André ter Stegen was sidelined with a long-term injury. He was brought out of retirement and initially served as a backup to Iñaki Peña.

The early performances of the crock on the head of the broken arm were costly mistakes, including errors in key matches, although he had started to return to form and was a regular first-team player by January.

On 14 May, at the conclusion of the season, Szczęsny had kept 14 clean sheets in 30 outings, gaining the confidence of coach Hansi Flick and establishing himself as a significant part of the team.

New Signing Raises Goalkeeping Questions
SzczÄ™sny’s original contract had run until the end of June, and the club has now announced that he has agreed to a two-year extension. Barcelona, meanwhile, has triggered city rival Espanyol's €25-million release clause for 24-year-old Joan García and provided competition for its gloves.

García’s arrival has led to speculation about the future of Marc-André ter Stegen, now 33 and returning from injury. Another loan signing means Emiliano Martínez obviously isn’t the answer as a backup goalkeeper, meanwhile, David Ospina is not expected to play for us in goal again.

Barcelona will start their preseason trip in Asia later in July and the first game of the 2025–26 La Liga season will be against Real Mallorca on 16 August.
