Jan Urban Appointed as Poland Football Manager

Jan Urban, a seasoned manager and former Poland international, has been appointed as the new head coach of the Polish national football team, the Polish Football Association (PZPN) confirmed on Wednesday. The appointment comes at a crucial moment as the team aims to secure qualification for the 2026 World Cup.

PZPN president Cezary Kulesza expressed confidence in the new leadership, stating, "We believe that this appointment will allow the national team to develop its full potential. Our goal is to qualify for the 2026 World Cup finals."

Urban is set to appear at his first press conference as head coach on Thursday at the PGE National Stadium in Warsaw.

Experienced Player and Coach
Jan Urban brings a wealth of experience both on and off the pitch. As a former striker, he earned 57 caps and scored seven goals for the national team. He represented Poland at the 1986 World Cup and enjoyed a successful club career in both Poland and Spain.

His coaching resume includes numerous club roles, and he is known for his tactical discipline and calm leadership—qualities that may prove essential in stabilising the national side after a turbulent period.

Challenging Road Ahead
Urban takes over from MichaÅ‚ Probierz, whose brief tenure ended in controversy. Tensions escalated when Probierz stripped star striker Robert Lewandowski of the captaincy following the player's withdrawal from a training camp. The situation worsened after a 2–1 loss to Finland in a critical World Cup qualifier, ultimately leading to Probierz's resignation.

Urban's first challenge as manager will be a tough away fixture against Group G leaders, the Netherlands, scheduled for September 4. The match is seen as a vital step in Poland's campaign to reach the 2026 World Cup.
