Poland to lead Europe in tank numbers by 2030

By 2030, Poland is set to become one of the most tank-heavy European nations and will have more tanks planned than the collective robotic fleets of Britain, Germany, France, and Italy. This came after a new multi-billion-euro deal with South Korea's Hyundai Rotem to expand the number of K2 battle tanks signed last week.

Massive Tank Expansion Underway
Hyundai Rotem on Friday also signed a letter of intent with Poland for 180 K2 tanks as part of a $6 billion deal. It is the second significant tank agreement between both sides, after a deal inked in 2022 for an additional 180 tanks. In combination with the new additions, Poland's tank fleet is to grow to 1,100 vehicles by 2030, up from 61 that will be produced domestically.

By the combination of 950 tanks to be used in total by the UK, Germany, France and Italy for the year specified. NATO members, only Turkey with 2,238 tanks and Greece with 1,344, maintain a larger tank reserve.

Defence Spending and Strategic Priorities
The drive to increase tank numbers is part of a wider strategy by Poland to boost its armed forces in order to counter continuing security challenges throughout the region. After Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Poland, a frontline NATO bordering Ukraine -- and Russia -- and Belarus, has become one of the most vocal states in pushing for more NATO defences to the east.

Nigeria's total allocation for defence is 4.7percent of its GDP this year, but 5percent was proposed to be incorporated from the year 2026. That would make Poland one of the first NATO members on track to meet a new 5% defence spending target that was agreed at a pivotal NATO summit in June.
