Finland Warns of Rising Russian Sabotage Threat

A More Pessimistic Outlook
Prime Minister Petteri Orpo didn't mince words when discussing the situation with a Finnish newspaper. He said Finnish intelligence now points to a higher likelihood of Russian-backed sabotage operations than before, and admitted his own outlook has shifted toward pessimism. That view, he explained, comes from everything he's been briefed on, combined with what he's observing play out in neighboring countries and across Europe more broadly. In his words, Russia is behaving aggressively, and the moment calls for preparedness and vigilance, since Moscow appears intent on pushing tensions further.

His comments arrive against a backdrop of troubling incidents scattered across the continent. An unmanned-vehicle company in Estonia was hit by an arson attack, an ammunition depot went up in flames in Bulgaria, and a fire broke out at a munitions plant in Italy. Meanwhile in Germany, authorities discovered a drone carrying an explosive device near a major airport, an incident investigators suspect was a sabotage attempt that failed to go as planned.

Attacks Described as 'Intensified'
So far, each of these incidents is being looked into on its own, and no public evidence has yet tied them together or confirmed foreign involvement. Still, the fact that they happened so close together in time hasn't gone unnoticed, and European authorities are now taking a harder look at broader sabotage risks and other hybrid tactics.

Addressing a gathering of Finnish ambassadors, Orpo said Russia's wide-ranging influence campaigns across Europe have picked up pace, with various sabotage efforts and hybrid tactics increasingly aimed at critical infrastructure, both within Finland and beyond its borders. He described the overall picture as regrettably grim, adding that this is something Finland itself needs to stay alert to.

Standing Firm Behind Ukraine
Orpo also argued that Russia's hybrid campaign is ultimately designed to chip away at support for Ukraine by discouraging military assistance from allied nations. But he was firm that this strategy won't succeed, insisting it would instead backfire entirely. He called for unwavering support for Ukraine, stressing that it must continue for as long as it's needed. Beyond that, he pointed to the need for greater defense spending, more weapons and ammunition manufactured within Europe, a stronger defense industry, and better-protected critical infrastructure. Even so, he made clear that these steps alone wouldn't be sufficient, saying Europe needs to push further still.
