Russian Missile Attack Kills Five in Kyiv

Widespread Damage Across the Capital
According to city authorities, people became trapped inside one residential building as flames broke out at multiple sites throughout the night. Kyiv's mayor confirmed that the strikes didn't just hit homes; non-residential structures, storage warehouses, and even a children's hospital were among the targets damaged in the attack. Witnesses on the ground described hearing more than a dozen explosions ring out during the assault.

Just outside Kyiv, in the surrounding region, officials reported that at least one more person lost their life in a separate strike. Emergency crews worked through the night, with footage showing rescue workers battling fires and pulling survivors from damaged buildings across the capital.

No End in Sight to the Conflict
This latest strike is just the newest chapter in a war that has seen near-daily attacks exchanged between Russia and Ukraine since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022. Despite ongoing diplomatic efforts involving both American and European officials, a lasting ceasefire has remained out of reach.

Meanwhile, neighboring Poland, a member of both NATO and the European Union, has ramped up defensive air operations to safeguard its own airspace following the overnight escalation.

Earlier this month, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed that Kyiv had submitted a peace proposal to American negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, aimed at bringing the war to a close. Zelenskyy has also continued pressing allies for interceptor missiles to help defend against these kinds of aerial assaults.

On the Russian side, a foreign ministry spokeswoman said Moscow had not received any concrete proposals for fresh talks with US negotiators, though she noted that Russia remained open to arranging a meeting on short notice. Witkoff and Kushner's most recent visit to Moscow took place back in January, and neither has traveled to Kyiv since.
