Maspex Acquires Romania's Purcari Wineries in Expansion Drive

Polish food and drink company Maspex has increased its presence in the alcoholic beverage market after purchasing Romania's Purcari Wineries, one of Central and Eastern Europe's largest wine and spirits producers.

The purchase demonstrates Maspex's ongoing expansion in the region and its growing commitment to leading alcohol brands.

Purcari Wineries is a company traded on the Bucharest Stock Exchange (ASX) that controls six wineries and cultivates over 2,000 hectares of vineyards across Moldova, Romania, and Bulgaria.

Renowned for its continuously successful premium quality and award-winning wines, the company owns Chateau Purcari – Central and Eastern Europe's most celebrated winery.

Maspex acquired more than 72% of Purcari's shares via a voluntary public offer, at 21 Romanian lei (€4.14) per share. The transaction is subject to final approval of Romanian regulators.

Strategic Growth and Regional Focus
Maspex CEO Krzysztof Pawiński confirmed the 7 May closing, and said that acquiring heritage brands with strong market positions is consistent with Maspex's strategy of growing its presence in the alcoholic beverages segment. Purcari Wineries, as a top producer of premium wines in Central and Eastern Europe, is an excellent choice to complement Maspex," he added.

Romania is already a very significant market for Maspex – we are only bigger in Poland. The group has poured €180 million into the country over the past 30 years and employs some 1,800 people there.

The acquisition of Purcari is the fourth to be made by Maspex in Romania, and follows its 22 acquisitions across Europe, including nine based in Poland.

Maspex's most popular Polish brands include Tymbark, Kubuś, Lubella, Łowicz, and Krakus, which have received high popularity amongst consumers in Poland, as well as outside its borders.

Expanding Alcohol Sector Presence
The company's desire for an alcohol play has expanded quickly in recent years. Maspex in 2022 bought several prominent vodka brands from the Russian billionaire Roustam Tariko, including Żubrówka, Soplica, Absolwent, and Bols.

In 2023, they acquired the production and fermentation plant of Czech liqueur brand Becherovka, in addition to all advertising rights for both China and Hong Kong.

By acquiring Purcari Wineries, Maspex further reinforces its position as a leader in the beverage markets of Central and Eastern Europe and its evolution from being not only a traditional food manufacturer into an integrated international group that has a strong presence in both non-alcoholic and alcoholic product categories.
