Koleje Mazowieckie and PGE Energetyka Kolejowa have become partners in the implementation of the SENSUM system, the latest smart solution in the area of eco-driving in rail transport.

This unique application has been developed to maximize the efficiency of train operation through more consistent and economical driving, providing a better ride for passengers with reduced energy costs.

The first 12 months of operation will generate electricity savings of over 22 GWh. The application has been used by the Koleje Mazowieckie company.

Technology Supporting Green Rail Transformation
Created by PGE Energetyka Kolejowa in conjunction with PGE Systemy and REDS, SENSUM is an IT system designed to reduce the use of energy, operating expenditure, and environmental impact.

Embedded into the Railway Energy Efficiency Center, the system gathers and analyses Big Data from train journeys, providing drivers with real-time driving instructions to guide them to use minimum energy all while guaranteeing punctual and safe arrivals. This operation is also part of the wider Zielona Kolejo program, to achieve climate neutrality in the railway sector.

Improved Driving, Better Passenger Experience
Known as "The Driver's Sixth Sense," Sensum creates a better awareness of the situation for train drivers. Before its launch, the system was given more than 10,000 hours of testing with five different carriers on nearly 600,000 kilometers.

In these demonstrations, over 300 MWh of electricity was conserved resulting in approximately 8.5% energy savings.

Feedback during these tests was used to better suit the system to the drivers.

Travelers also get to enjoy a softer experience on our rides as well as the environmental benefits of eco-friendly travel. While the focus of SENSUM is currently on passenger transport, proposals also exist to expand SENSUM to cover freight services.
