Poland's New President Tougher on Ukraine

Nawrocki against NATO membership for Ukraine
Nawrocki didn't mince words on his position on Ukraine joining NATO, saying it would end up dragging NATO into a direct war with Russia. "Ukraine's accession to NATO is the declaration of war against the Russian Federation," he cautioned.

This is a dramatic contrast to President Duda, who has long been an outspoken messenger for NATO support of Ukraine. Addressing a NATO summit on Monday, Duda said he hoped Nawrocki would "approach Polish-Ukranian relations with utmost care" and follow the present course of action at NATO, which has consistently backed Ukraine during the conflict.

A New Direction in Foreign Policy?
Like Duda, Nawrocki is politically aligned, but in his divergence on issues of security and international ties, he might represent an important new chapter in Polish policy. As he prepares to assume office, his leadership could very well determine the state of Polish-Ukrainian cooperation and the prospect of Poland's role in NATO support strategies.
