Poland's President-Elect Nawrocki Touts 'Very Good' Call with Trump

Karol Nawrocki, the President-elect of Poland, revealed that U.S. President Donald Trump had a very good" conversation with "close allied relations" and attacked them both in the way they are viewed by the media. During the call, Nawrocki said, both of them invited each other — with Trump, so he said, inviting him to the White House and Nawrocki inviting him to Poland.

Nawrocki, a right-wing nationalist who is anti-European Union, published the letter to X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday. The call highlighted Nawrocki's longstanding ties with Trump, which included a photo op when the president visited Washington for a campaign fundraiser.

Common Ideological Inspiration and Contrasting Positions on Ukraine
Both have have campaigned on conservative platforms and maintained a policy of national sovereignty. Nawrocki, a vocal critic of Ukraine's current application to join the European Union, has a different approach than outgoing President Andrzej Duda, who supported Kyiv's fast-track admission. Nawrocki's announcement strikes a new tone even as he has said he would like to settle historic disputes with Ukraine particularly the Volhynia Massacre of World War II in order to improve the bilateral ties.

Nawrocki is a member of Poland's right-wing Law and Justice (PiS) party, which has enjoyed friendly relations with Trump's administration. With the ruling coalition now running across the political spectrum in Poland, Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski remains hopeful that he can work with Nawrocki, particularly on areas of mutual interest like the issue of supporting Ukraine against Russian aggression.

Historical Relations and Future Prospects
While diplomatic assurances from Ukraine are that it will pursue continuity in its relations with Poland, Nawrocki's sole focus on overcoming historical tensions caused by, for instance, the Volhynia Massacre, may create obstacles in between. The recent controversy over the exhumation of massacre victims also underscores the complications to come.

When Poland's new president is inaugurated, his affinity for Trump and emphasis on nationalism and historical memory could have the effect of redirecting Poland's domestic and foreign policies in new directions.
