Iga Świątek Exits WTA Finals After Shock Defeat

Iga Świątek of Poland was eliminated from the WTA Finals in Saudi Arabia, suffering a defeat of 7-6, 4-6, 2-6 to American Amanda Anisimova. The 2023 champion had hoped to win her second WTA Finals title, but she exited the tournament in the group stage after losing two of her first three matches. The defeat was an unexpected end to a successful season, when Świątek won her first grass court title at Wimbledon. Ironically, she defeated Anisimova 6-0, 6-0 in that very final.

After the match, Świątek said of the loss, "Such a loss just hurts ... I did what I could and I put everything in."

A Game for the Ages
The match lasted just under three hours and was physically and mentally draining as both players competed for a spot in the semi-finals in a winner-takes-all match. Świątek edged a tense first set in a tiebreak after Anisimova hit a forehand long. In the second set, Anisimova responded, broke Świątek's serve in the tenth game to level the match and force the decider.

With the momentum in her favour, Anisimova broke to open up the third set, taking a 3-1 lead and she held that lead throughout to complete an impressive comeback victory at the King Saud University Sports Arena.

Season to Remember
Świątek began the WTA Finals with a strong victory over American Madison Keys, winning 6-1, 6-2, but then lost to Jelena Rybakina (Kazakhstan) in her second match 6-3, 1-6, 0-6. Despite her 2018 WTA Finals exit, the Polish star has had a season to remember, highlighted by her Wimbledon title and continued form throughout the entire season.
