Polish-American Businessman Buys 40% Stake in Legia Warsaw

Michael Gorzynski, who serves as executive chairman of Continental General, a large insurance company based in Texas, is the man behind the investment. His purchase involves buying existing shares from Dariusz Mioduski, who has been the club's majority owner, along with newly issued shares. Interestingly, the timing lines up almost perfectly with the decade mark since Mioduski himself bought out Legia's other shareholders.

A New Role at the Top
Gorzynski isn't just becoming a co-owner, either. He'll also step into the role of chairman of Legia's supervisory board, while Mioduski continues running things from the management board. It's a partnership structure that keeps day-to-day leadership familiar while bringing fresh financial backing into the club.

Tackling the Club's Debt Problem
One of the biggest reasons behind this deal is money, or more specifically, the lack of it. Legia has been carrying debts north of 200 million złoty, roughly €46 million, and this fresh capital is expected to ease that burden considerably. The club explained that the investment, along with a related shareholder loan, would help shrink its debt load and put its finances on much sturdier ground going forward.

Gorzynski himself didn't hide his excitement about the deal. Speaking about his decision, he said he sees enormous promise in Polish football, and that potential feels most obvious to him at Legia Warsaw. As someone born in Poland, he added, it means a great deal to him personally to help shape the next phase of the club's story.

At 47, Gorzynski built his wealth as an investor in the U.S. after studying at UC Berkeley and later earning an MBA from Harvard Business School. Estimates of his net worth vary, ranging from roughly $100 million to $240 million, with much of that tied up in stock holdings.
