Zuzanna Cieślar Wins Historic Silver at Fencing Worlds

Poland's Zuzanna Cieślar achieved a historic result on Sunday, winning a medal in the individual event of the World Fencing Championships for the first time in Polish women's sabre fencing history. She took the silver medal on the back of a strong showing throughout, eventually losing 11:15 to Russia's Jana Jegorian, a Rio Olympics gold medallist for the ROC (Russian Olympic Committee).

A Breakthrough for Polish Fencing
Seeded 67th in the world going into the event, Cieślar promoted against a number of well-ranked opponents. Her silver is Poland's first podium finish at these championships and the 90th all-time in Poland's history at the World Championships. Polish sabre fencers had only collected bronze before — Aleksandra Shelton in 2003 and Bogna Jóźwiak in 2007.

She kicked off her sensational campaign by overcoming China's Xinyi Zhang 15:10. She beat seventh-seeded Luka Szucs of Hungary 15-12 in the Round of 32 and Japan's Yui Kaneko 15-12 in the Round of 16.

Her toughest test came in the quarterfinals against Sarah Noutcha of France, the No. 4 fencer in the world and this year's European champion. Cieślar dominated for most of the match and after leading 12:12 pulled away for good with a 3-0 run for the win.

She reached the final after defeating European vice-champion Alina Komaszczuk [UKR] with 15:12 in the semifinals.

Pride for Club and Country
Cieślar practices at the Zagłębie Fencing Club in the vicinity of Katowice and is a student of physiotherapy. The club posted a happy message on Facebook to congratulate her and coach Tomasz Dominik: "THEY DID IT!!! The World Championship medal is here! We have faith in you to the very end!"

Controversy Around Gold Medalist
Gold medallist Jegorian competes under a neutral flag due to the Russian war in Ukraine, and the International Fencing Federation (FIE) enforced regulation. Her inclusion has been condemned by Ukrainian officials because of alleged connections to Moscow's CSKA club. The FIE now mandates that athletes from Russia sign a declaration of neutrality and peace in order to compete internationally.

Despite the disputations, though, Cieślar's victory is a triumph for Polish fencing as well as a point to remain active in the annals of the nation's athletic history.
