Cherry-Sized Hailstorm Strikes Northeastern Poland

Residents in Sokółka, in Poland's northeastern Podlaskie region, said hailstones had fallen the size of cherries after a large storm broke out on Sunday. If you scroll down to the videos and images, there are widespread icy scenes in and around the streets.

Local authorities said the storm had prompted "a number of callouts" to the fire service.

This was revealed by the Storm Observers Network from a small village in the Warmian-Masurian province — Sampława. Eleven regions, including Warmia and Masuria, Podlaskie, Mazovia, Lublin, Subcarpathian, and Lesser Poland voivodeships, were placed under a thunderstorm alert by the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW).

Hail, Rain, and Heat alerts
The RCB NCB has also issued another warning for storms with hail and strong winds in parts of Lesser Poland and Podkarpackie. Meteorologist Wiesław Winnicki from IMGW said that in north, east, and south Poland the atmospheric storm will bring 20 mm of rainfall.

Off-and-on sun may be possible on Sunday for Poland with cloudy skies expected in the north, east, and central regions, where showers are also likely. Thunderstorms may continue to produce pea-size hail and 20mm of rainfall in a storm.

There are also first-level heat warnings for some of southeastern Poland, where the daytime highs should be between 29°C and 32 °C. These kick in at 12:00 am local time and last until 8:00 pm. The RCB requested that residents take precautions and tie down anything that could be blown away by gusts of wind.
