Poland to Launch App for Finding Emergency Shelters

The interior minister of Poland announced that they would be developing a smartphone application that will aid residents in locating emergency shelters if there is an outbreak of war or natural disasters. Officials are saying the application will be an expansion of the current database of shelters on a national level, while also improving public safety in crisis situations.

Shelters Database and Capacity
According to Interior Ministry spokesperson Karolina Gałecka, the new tool would be similar to systems built in public infrastructure, similar to Poland's surrounding countries. The application would use information from Schrony ("Shelters"), an interactive web map which displays over 230,000 registered hiding spots across Poland.

The shelters range from lower protection level areas to reinforced areas. The total capacity of all the shelters, according to the State Fire Service, is over 49 million places if numerous shelters are used. The population of Poland is over 36.6 million currently.

Public Awareness Due to Security Concerns
This announcement of a shelter database app comes after heightened security concerns following NATO fighter jets response to suspected Russian drones entering Polish airspace. Public safety officials would like to be sure that citizens know where to go and what to do during emergencies.

To initiate public awareness about preparing for threats, the interior ministry has initiated a public awareness campaign in coordination with Poland's national broadcaster to allow residents to know how to follow current events and how to be prepared for any threats.
