Ukraine to Get Patriot Missiles, HIMARS in New Aid

Ukraine is set to receive missiles for its Patriot air defence systems and HIMARS rocket launchers in the near future, as part of the first delivery of weapons through a recently established international funding program. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced this aid on Wednesday at a press briefing in Kyiv with European Parliament President Roberta Metsola.

Funding Program Details
These weapons will be provided through the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) - a process led by NATO designed to coordinate financing to procure American-made weaponry. President Zelenskyy said Ukraine already had over $2 billion in funding through PURL, which he expected to raise to $3.5 billion later in the month.

NATO allies ultimately plan to provide up to about $10 billion in arms to Kyiv through this program. The first two shipments of weapons through this program, each valued at $500 million, will include missiles for both the Patriot and HIMARS systems. Patrick Turner, NATO's senior representative in Ukraine, stated that four PURL funding packages had been provided, and equipment funded was already arriving in Ukraine.

Role of the United States and Strategic Importance
The funding had received the rubber stamp from U.S. President Donald Trump's administration, which has been sceptical about U.S. expenditure on Ukraine, but has backed a tighter funding program to let European allies cover the cost of aid while the U.S. supplied weapons. U.S. Undersecretary of Defence for Policy Elbridge Colby approved two of the initial shipments, each amounting to $500 million, with more in the pipeline.

The HIMARS rocket launchers and Patriot missiles have been critical to Ukraine's defence, successfully stopping Russian attacks and supporting several successful counteroffensives. Ukraine is still reliant on Western air defence systems, especially as officials indicate the possibility of increased Russian attacks on energy security systems over the winter period.
