Poland Plans 300 km/h Trains for New High-Speed Rail

Poland is set to buy 26 trains for its new high-speed rail network that will be capable of speeds above 300 km/h, Deputy Infrastructure Minister Piotr Malepszak has revealed. The "Y" route will connect Warsaw with Sieradz, Wrocław, and Poznań at a speed of 350 km/h.

Four hundred eighty kilometers in length, the route will swing through the future home of a massive combined air, rail, and road transport hub.

None of the trains in Poland currently run at a speed exceeding 200 km/h, which is usually used to indicate that a railway track is high-speed rail.

A tender will go out next year for train sets capable of running at a minimum top speed of 320 km/h; however, the government would prefer even faster models around 350 km/h.

Quicker Times to Airport, Slight Price Bump
Malepszak said the Y route would involve more than 100 trains daily, which in total will run over 12 million kilometres a year. The 320 km/h trains would reduce the journey times by a large extent compared with 250 km/h, which cannot be achieved.

At the same time, the higher speeds mean more energy is used, but ticket prices are expected to go up by just about 8 zlotys ($2) per passenger.

The contract will not come into force until the PKP InterCity purchases double-decker trains. In March, the Central Transportation Hub project, however, signed a cooperation agreement with Korea National Railway, aiding in the development of a high-speed rail system.
