Trump outlined this plan during a phone call with European leaders in recent days, according to people familiar with the matter. The proposal appeared to have the support of European leaders. But the potential meeting place has not been finalised.

On Wednesday, Trump's special envoy met with Putin for about three hours. The meeting was pushed for by both the key leaders, hoping to strike a decisive moment after Russia's launch of an all-out war on Ukraine since 2022. Afterwards, President Trump tweeted that the talks had gone well and that work will continue "much longer into the night."

Officials from the White House said additional sanctions on Russia -- known as secondary sanctions -- are expected to be implemented by Friday as well, an indication that pressure on Moscow is still forthcoming.

Russia must return vessel or face 'forceful response': Ukraine
Trump held at least two phone calls with Putin and has visited Zelenskyy since returning to the presidency in January. However, the president's patience with Russia seems to be wearing thin, but he has recently started vocally criticising Moscow for not doing enough to stop the war.

Putin responded by stating he sought a written guarantee that allow Russian gas exports to continue if Russia invades Ukraine Last month, Trump gave Russia until 50 days from now Hurry up or we will hit 100 per cent tariffs on imports from countries importing oil under any future deal The window has since been narrowed to 10 days — Russia must act by August 8. This gives the hosting country until midnight Friday to conclude all contracts and to apply for any necessary visa.

At the same time, Ukraine is demanding an immediate unilateral ceasefire. But Russia, which by controlling roughly one-fifth of Ukraine now effectively rules over its eastern flank, has stood fast in both appealing the ceasefire decision and rejecting Ukraine's demand for a cessation of hostilities.

Keir Starmer announced on Monday that he would step down as British Prime Minister, with a successor expected to be in place before Parliament reconvenes in September. The announcement came less than two years after Starmer led Labour to a sweeping election victory that many hoped would bring stability back to British politics. In the end, it was pressure from within his own party that proved impossible to ignore. Nominations to replace him are set to open on July 9, with Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham already emerging as the strong frontrunner.

Flamingo Protests Grow Over Kushner-Linked Albania Resort Plan

A protected coastal lagoon in Albania has become the unlikely flashpoint for a growing environmental and political storm. At the heart of it is a proposed luxury resort connected to Jared Kushner, son-in-law of US President Donald Trump. What started as concern over flamingos and fragile ecosystems has quickly snowballed into something much bigger — a public reckoning over corruption, land privatization, and who really gets to decide the fate of protected natural spaces.

Ukraine Must Lead Its Own Peace Process, Security Analyst Warns

As European nations quietly work to revive diplomacy around the war in Ukraine, a clear message is emerging from security experts: any peace effort must be built around what Ukraine wants, not what outside powers find convenient. Republicans Defy Trump, House Passes Ukraine Aid Bill

It is not every day that members of the President's own party openly go against his wishes on a major foreign policy issue. But that is exactly what happened on Thursday, when the US House of Representatives passed legislation aimed at supporting Ukraine and hitting Russia with fresh sanctions. The Ukraine Support Act cleared the chamber with a vote of 226 to 195, marking a notable moment of bipartisan defiance in an otherwise deeply divided Congress.

EU Pushes to Trump-Proof Fragile US Trade Agreement

A senior European Parliament trade official has described the newly negotiated US trade framework as far from ideal, yet necessary — and now says the priority is making it bulletproof against future pressure from Washington. Karin Karlsbro, vice chair of the European Parliament's trade committee and a Swedish liberal MEP, stated plainly that the Turnberry framework was not a great outcome, but it was the one on the table. With a final vote expected on June 16, she argued the deal must be made resistant to Donald Trump's tariff threats before it crosses the finish line.
