Six Hurt in Polish Youth Cycling Race Crash

A frightening scene unfolded during a youth cycling race in northern Poland on Sunday, when a chain-reaction crash brought down more than a dozen riders and left six of them needing hospital care. One competitor even had to be flown out by helicopter after the incident, which took place during the 21st Wojciech Paduch Memorial road race in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian region.

How the Crash Unfolded
Early accounts suggest the trouble began when a female rider lost control and fell to the ground. What followed was almost unavoidable, as several cyclists riding close behind her had no time to react and crashed into her one after another. In total, 17 riders ended up on the pavement in the chaos. Of those involved, six were hurt badly enough to require medical treatment. Five were rushed to hospital by ambulance, while a sixth had to be airlifted out by a medical rescue helicopter, underlining just how serious the pile-up looked in those first chaotic moments.

Injuries and Aftermath
Fortunately, things could have been much worse. Reports from the scene indicated that the injured riders remained conscious throughout, and most walked away with nothing more than cuts and bruising. Still, not everyone was so lucky. One cyclist suffered a broken arm, while another was diagnosed with a concussion, injuries serious enough to require closer observation. As for the legal side of things, authorities confirmed there would be no formal investigation into the crash, since the race was held on a road that had been officially closed to regular traffic at the time.
