The funding is a part of a more expansive €280 million package, authorized by the European Parliament, that is intended to assist six Central European countries that were ravaged last fall by unusual weather.

Flood Assistance for Six Countries
In addition to Poland, the EU will also provide finance for the other five countries —Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Czech Republic, Moldova, and Slovakia — from the EU Solidarity Fund. This fund was established in 2022, to assist EU Member States and accession States during natural crises.

The biggest portion of the aid, €194.2 million, will be provided to Moldova, with €114 million for the Czech Republic. Poland, which received €76 million will use the money to mend public infrastructure, including roads, schools, and bridges, which were impacted by the floods.

Flood Damage Across Central Europe
The floods, which hit in September 2024, originated in Austria and the Czech Republic and then spread through Central Europe, to Poland. In October, flash floods and landslides further devastated Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The EU Solidarity Fund is a central instrument to accompany immediate and longer-term recovery in the aftermath of disasters. Since opening, it has disbursed almost €10 billion in disaster relief in 24 countries in response to 136 natural disasters.

The new money will also aid affected regions to recover faster and to rebuild vital infrastructure damaged in last year's catastrophic floods.

Donahue, who has served as the head of US Army Europe and Africa since late 2024 and also holds the position of NATO's top land forces commander, will officially step down on July 2. The move is part of a broader and deeply controversial restructuring of America's senior military leadership under the Trump administration.

Ukraine Drone Blitz Leaves Russian-Held Crimea Without Fuel

Petrol stations across Russian-occupied Crimea went dry on Thursday, a visible sign of how effectively Ukraine has been squeezing the peninsula's supply lines from the air. In Sevastopol, the largest city on the peninsula, most filling stations had nothing to offer. Even the rationing system put in place in recent weeks was struggling to function. In the resort town of Yevpatoriya, drivers lined up outside the only station still operating, hoping for whatever little was left.
