Zelenskyy tops US ranking of global leaders

The results of a new public opinion poll conducted by global public opinion firm YouGov show that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is the most popular global leader among the American public, surpassing the popularity of the current U.S. president, Donald Trump. The survey results show that, regardless of President Trump's criticisms of him, President Zelenskyy has a strong image in the United States because of his leadership during the continuing tensions around the world at this time.

The poll revealed that President Zelenskyy has the highest approval rating. President Zelenskyy received a total favorability score of 42%, with 22% of respondents rating him as "very favourable," and another 20% rating him as "somewhat favourable." His unfavorability score was 29%, including 14% "very unfavourable" and 15% "somewhat unfavourable." Thus, President Zelenskyy had a net favorability rating of +14%, which places him at the top of the rankings. Also, 29% of respondents stated they did not know enough about him to have an opinion.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney came in second place in regard to the approval rating among global leaders with a net favorability rating of +6%, and President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, came in third place with a net favorability rating of +5%. The other two leaders in the top five were King Charles III of the United Kingdom and Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi of Japan, with net favorability ratings of +3% each.

The least favored global leaders are as follows: Kim Jon Un of North Korea (-73% net favorability rating); Vladimir Putin (-72% net favorability rating); Nicolás Maduro of Venezuela (-53% net favorability rating); Xi Jinping of China (-44% net favorability rating); and Ali Khamenei of Iran (-29% net favorability rating).

This poll included a representative sample of 2,274 U.S. adults and was conducted between January 22 and 26, 2023. Thus, the responses captured in the poll reflect the current opinion of the American public regarding global leaders and show a strong position for President Zelenskyy against other global leaders.

In a show of resilience that few cities at war could pull off, around 5,000 people took to the streets of Kyiv on Sunday for the city's annual Pride March — the largest LGBTQ+ gathering in the Ukrainian capital since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in 2022. The march brought together a remarkably broad crowd: LGBTQ+ individuals, active-duty soldiers, veterans, human rights defenders, diplomats, and supporters from across the country. It ran for roughly two hours before wrapping up, coinciding with a Russian drone strike on the capital as it drew to a close.
