Karol Nawrocki Elected Poland’s President in Tight Race

Jim Karol’s Mind-Reading Trick Goes Wrong in AGT Semifinals – ‘Creepy’!
Conservative historian Karol Nawrocki has just been declared the winner in a country facing a highly polarised vote. The final tally showed Nawrocki with 50.9% of the vote compared to 49.1% for Warsaw’s liberal mayor, Rafal Trzaskowski.

A Break from Exit Polls, and a Shock Pods for your listening pleasure A new twist on the Electoral College map presidential campaign In the latest episode of “The Lucky.” And octoxox Reflecting on the Citizens United ruling.

The finding was a dramatic turnaround of the first exit poll, published just after polls had closed at 21:00 local time (19:00 GMT), which had found Trzaskowski just ahead at 50.3% to Nawrocki’s 49.7%. Trzaskowski had already declared victory late on Sunday with the early poll — telling his supporters, “We won, and though the phrase ‘the razor’s edge’ will forever enter the Polish language and politics.” His wife, Malgorzata, said with a chuckle, “I’m close to having a heart attack.”

But Nawrocki had also sounded a note of caution, “Let’s not keep our hopes up for tonight. We are going to win during the night, the margin is small. I think we’ll wake up tomorrow with President Karol Nawrocki.”
Impact in Polish politics

In as much as his role will have greater credibility as president, it will also allow him to veto Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s pro-EU schemes. His win is also a victory for the rightist national conservative party Law and Justice (PiS), which has been in opposition after losing power 18 months ago. The outcome could help them cement their return to power in the 2027 parliamentary polls.

The 42-year-old Nawrocki is a keen supporter of traditional Catholic and family values and insists on Polish sovereignty in the European Union. And while he backs continued help to Ukraine, he is not in favor of the country joining NATO or the EU “while Russia continues to behave as it does.”

The presidency in Poland is largely ceremonial, but the ability to thwart legislation is a powerful weapon in shaping government policy. Prime Minister Tusk’s coalition does not have the numbers to force through bills in the face of a presidential veto – confirmed last week when President Komoroswki blocked measures such as judicial reform and change to the country’s stringent abortion laws.

Nawrocki’s Ascension and Political Philosophy
The conservative outgoing president, Andrzej Duda, congratulated Nawrocki on what he called the “heroic fight until the last minute of the campaign.” Duda, who was limited to two terms and could not, therefore, seek re-election, also repeatedly wielded his veto power to derail major parts of Tusk’s platform.

“At the same time, it did not escape their attention to help Poland build a more sovereign position in Europe.’’ While Nawrocki and Trzaskowski agree on their support for continued aid to Ukraine, they sharply disagree about the European Union. A former Europe minister, Trzaskowski represents Tusk’s more European vision, seen in closer integration with the EU, particularly with France and Germany. Nawrocki, by contrast, is against further ceding of national powers to Brussels as well as the EU's climate and migration policies.

Prior to becoming PiS’ “unofficial” candidate, Nawrocki was not particularly well known throughout Poland. He is a sports fan and often posts workout photos, while his hobbies include amateur boxing and football. On the campaign trail, he made waves by traveling to Washington for a brief meeting with Donald Trump, who gave him a thumbs-up in the Oval Office for a photo.

Trump Says Ceasefire Holds Despite U.S.-Iran Gulf Clashes

Tensions between the United States and Iran flared dramatically on Thursday when naval forces from both sides exchanged fire in the Gulf, raising serious concerns about the fragile ceasefire that had been holding since April 7. The fighting put a month-old truce under serious strain and cast fresh doubt on diplomatic efforts to bring the conflict — sparked by joint U.S.-Israeli airstrikes on Iran on February 28 — to a negotiated close. Despite the violence, President Donald Trump insisted the ceasefire was still technically in place and downplayed the incident with characteristic bluntness.

Armenia Declares It Is Not Russia's Ally in Ukraine War

Armenia has made its position crystal clear — it does not stand with Russia in the war against Ukraine. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said publicly that his country is "not an ally" of Russia, a statement that landed like a thunderbolt in Moscow. The timing made it even more pointed. Just days earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had visited Yerevan for the first time in 24 years to attend the European Political Community summit — a gathering of roughly 48 European leaders that sent a loud signal about which direction Armenia is heading.

Poland is positioning itself as a key entry point for American energy into Central Europe. US Ends Oil Sanctions Waivers, Targets Iran and Russia

Washington has quietly but firmly shut the door on a policy that had been generating controversy for weeks. The United States has decided not to renew a temporary waiver that had allowed Iranian oil to continue flowing to global markets, and has also let a separate waiver on Russian oil at sea expire without renewal. Two administration officials confirmed the decisions, which mark a sharp pivot toward full enforcement of sanctions that had previously been softened under the banner of energy price relief. The Iranian waiver is set to officially expire on April 19, while the Russian waiver already lapsed over the weekend.
