Russia accuses Serbia of secretly sending arms to Ukraine

The statement continued that “the betrayal of an allied state” continued through the “illegal deliveries of weapons from Serbia to encourage the new regime in Kiev in its criminal plans. Even though Serbia claims to be neutral in the current Russia-Ukraine conflict, Russian officials said that Serbian companies have been actively providing Kyiv with ammunition. This was condemned by Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) as an attempt to “stab Russia in the back,” who underlined that the transfers are being made via third countries on the basis of fake end-user certificates.

Reported Indirect Shipment of Arms via NATO Members
SVR reported that the arms are being transferred through a system that includes NATO countries such as the Czech Republic, Poland and Bulgaria. In some recent instances, intermediaries were said to have been African countries. According to the SVR, Serbia’s military industry has supplied hundreds of thousands of shells for systems such as multiple launch rocket systems and howitzers, along with one million small arms rounds. Russian intelligence called this operation a “conveyor of death” run by a country that has long been viewed as friendly.


Serb Government Denies Role
Though such allegations have fuelled diplomatic tensions, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has denied involvement in arms provisions to Ukraine in the past. Serbia has deep cultural and historical links with Russia but it also wants to join the EU and has been walking a tightrope between East and West. Last year, reports put at up to $855 million the cost of ammunition from Serbia via indirect routes to end in Ukraine. But the number has not been confirmed by the authorities in Serbia.
