Poland's Wimbledon Day One: Setbacks and One Bright Spot

Three Early Exits Cast a Shadow
Monday at the All England Club in London didn't go the way Poland had hoped, with Magda Linette, Magdalena Fręch, and Chwalińska all bowing out in the opening round. Linette, currently ranked 59th in the world, fell to fifth seed Mirra Andreeva of Russia in straight sets, 5-7, 4-6. Fręch's run ended similarly, losing 6-7 (5-7), 4-6 against Russia's Anna Kalinskaya, who came in seeded 19th.

Of the three losses, though, Chwalińska's stung the most. The 24-year-old had been riding a wave of attention after becoming the first qualifier ever to reach the French Open final, and she looked sharp early on at Wimbledon too, taking the first set against Thailand's Mananchaya Sawangkaew. But things took a turn when she rolled her ankle on match point during the second set, forcing her to pause for medical attention. She battled on but ultimately fell 6-2, 5-7, 2-6. Afterwards, Chwalińska admitted she wasn't sure whether the injury would keep her out of the doubles competition as well.

Hurkacz Bounces Back in Style
While the women's results disappointed, Hubert Hurkacz provided a much-needed bright spot. He took down 11th seed Casper Ruud of Norway in three sets, 6-4, 6-2, 7-6 (9-7), to advance to the second round. The win carried extra weight, too, since it marked his first time back at Wimbledon since suffering a serious knee injury at the same tournament two years prior. The former Wimbledon semi-finalist will now turn his attention to Austria's Sebastian Ofner in the next round.

Meanwhile, two more Polish hopes, Iga Świątek and world number 45 Kamil Majchrzak, have yet to step onto the court for their opening matches, both set to begin play on Tuesday.
