Unionists Fear Privatization Under New Health Minister

Trade union representatives are expressing growing concern following the appointment of Jolanta Sobierańska-Grenda as the new Minister of Health.

The reaction has been intense, with unionists saying they fear renewed street protests due to possible policy shifts.

Grzegorz Urbaniak, a member of the presidium of the National Secretariat of Health Protection of NSZZ "Solidarity," highlighted the new minister's strict and autocratic approach, as well as her inflexible stance during past negotiations.

From Pomorskie Hospitals to National Health
Jolanta Sobierańska-Grenda, a qualified lawyer, doctor of economics, and experienced medical manager, takes over from Katarzyna Lubnauer (née Leszczyna) as Health Minister.

Previously, she served as president of the board at Pomorskie Hospitals Ltd. in Gdynia and directed the Health Department at the Pomeranian Voivodeship Marshal's Office in Gdańsk.

Her previous roles included overseeing the restructuring and debt reduction of nearly 30 hospitals.

During her official introduction, Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that Sobierańska-Grenda would continue her predecessor's work.

He assured the public that medical service digitization would accelerate and praised the new minister's firm leadership in stabilizing the Pomeranian region's healthcare system.

Hospital Consolidation Raises Alarm
Unionist Grzegorz Urbaniak pointed to the mixed outcomes of the hospital consolidations led by Sobierańska-Grenda. He noted that these mergers did not significantly improve the overall staffing and financial conditions in healthcare facilities. According to him, many emergency departments and hospital wards remain understaffed with both doctors and nurses.

Urbaniak added that some well-functioning, low-debt hospitals were merged with highly indebted ones, which made it unclear whether the financial goals of consolidation were ever met. While initial data was published, no recent updates have been shared. He emphasized that many county hospitals are now struggling, largely due to the rising costs associated with medical professionals hired on expensive contracts.

Privatization Fears Resurface
Unionists familiar with Sobierańska-Grenda's leadership describe her as strict, uncompromising, and autocratic in implementing changes. Some preferred to stay anonymous but expressed serious concern that her approach might lead to a return of privatization in the healthcare sector.

One unionist reacted emotionally, saying, "Oh Jesus! This will be a highway to privatization! We thought we wouldn't have to take to the streets anymore, but it looks like we will." Another pointed out the importance of Karol Nawrocki's recent election as president, believing he may act as a barrier to privatization, much like Lech Kaczyński did in 2008.

There's also apprehension that the Prime Minister might attempt to bypass legal checks, with one unionist stating that this cannot be ruled out given his perceived disregard for legal procedures.
