Pavel Latushka, a former Belarusian culture minister turned opposition activist, said an attack against him in Warsaw had been prompted by remarks in recent days from President Alexander Lukashenko. Latushka, currently a deputy to stiff opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, said a trash can was thrown in his direction at a University of Warsaw event Wednesday at him, and he was called a traitor and again accused by Lukashenko.
Poland's prime minister, Donald Tusk, has hit out at opposition-backed right-wing "militias" which he accuses of hindering operations at the border, as tensions simmer between the two nations over the repatriation of illegal migrants by Germany. Ukraine strips Kyiv's patriarch of citizenship after revelation Moscow Vicariate head of UOC-MP has a Russian passport. Ukraine has annulled Metropolitan Onufriy of Kyiv's, the head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP), citizenship after discovering he received Russian citizenship on the sly in 2002. The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) said on Wednesday that Onufriy, whose secular name is Orest Berezovsky, had not revealed his Russian citizenship, which is no longer grounds to lose his Ukrainian citizenship under a new law.
Two state prosecutors walked into the Supreme Court building in Poland on Monday, seeking access to more than 200 files related to protests over the recent presidential election. The step, taken by the National Prosecutor's Office, which deployed officers after direct orders from the head of the office, Prosecutor General and Justice Minister Adam Bodnar, has escalated tension between the country's legal institutions one day before the constitutional deadline to confirm the election results.
Poland says it will boost its production of large calibre artillery shells fivefold amid mounting concern over critical ammunition shortages. In the case of shells, the government would inject 2.4 billion zÅ‚oty (€566 million) into state-run arms manufacturer PGZ to increase annual production of the shells from 30,000 to up to 180,000 over the next three years.
