Lithuania Sues Belarus Over State-Led Migrant Smuggling Case
Lithuania Accuses Belarus of 'Hijacking' Flight at Top UN CourtLithuania has brought a case to the International Court of Justice accusing Belarus of orchestrating a state-sponsored campaign to funnel migrants across their shared frontier. The complaint stated that Belarus has itself deliberately allowed illegal migration "to destabilize Lithuania and other neighbouring countries." The step is known as Lithuania's first-launched interstate legal action before the UN's highest court. The justice minister, Rimantas Mockus, described it as a "historic step" to hold Belarus responsible for its role in the 2021-2022 migration surge along the eastern borders of the European Union.
