In central Poland, history enthusiasts have a hit major archaeological jackpot, by finding an entire war cemetery, dedicated to the Przeworsk culture – an Iron Age people whose ethnic origins remain a mystery among scholars. The site was discovered close to the village of Zbiersk by members of the Denar Kalisz Association who found the spearhead and a disc of bronze or timber – which they initially believed was the umbo of a shield.

Israel has given a green light to the largest expansion of Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank since the Oslo Accords were signed more than 30 years ago. In all, 22 new settlements are to be created, some deep in the West Bank and in zones it had removed from in the past. The decision was jointly made by Defense Minister Israel Katz and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who stressed that it was part of a strategic, long-term plan.
Ukraine is preparing for a massive summer offensive by Russia, which has escalated missile, drone and ground attacks on multiple regions. Officials are reported as saying that Ukrainian troops are retreating from parts of Donetsk and the north and from rural areas in the south. The Russian military now appears to be seizing about 14 square kilometers of territory a day, with the ultimate goal of taking the four annexed territories of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson.
A major glacier collapse in the Swiss Alps on Wednesday set off a powerful landslide of mud, rock and debris that buried much of the mountain village of Blatten, which had been evacuated earlier this month after authorities warned of a potential rockslide. One person is still missing as a result of the incident, the officials said.
High-ranking Russian serviceman and first deputy mayor of Stavropol, Zaur Gurtsiev, died of a grenade explosion on May 28. The episode unfolded near a residential building in the city of Stavropol. Gurtsiev was accosted by 29-year-old Nikita Penkov, who then detonated the grenade, which killed both.
